paradox (2019)

“Paradox” is a series exploring the relationship between light and dark. Light and dark (and other very similar forms of paradox) is a topic that is heavily discussed in writing, films, and conversation because of its complex nature. Almost every form of media, entertainment, and/or communication features a relationship between two opposite ideas, often opening up the discussion for how the two are built upon each other yet also break each other down.

Choosing specifically to display the two through photographs is intentional. Photography captures a specific moment in time and makes it last forever, similarly to how light and darkness exists and tends to seem eternal. The fleeting essence of the two hardly ever goes noticed despite its reality. Photography also challenges the topic at hand, as it primarily requires light to capture the photo and the details within, possibly suggesting that the thematic relationship captured wouldn’t have been made without light to begin with. This further opens up the conversation as to the true definition of the two and a question of whether anything in the world exists without everything else.

My series of photographs showcases the established idea of two opposite forms--light and dark--and how they are interrelated in ways that are overlooked. “Paradox” is a series that will bring more attention to much-needed conversations.
